Laminating Pouches

What To Look For When Buying A Pouch Laminator

When you decide to start looking for a pouch laminator you will immediately notice that there is an abundance of laminators to choose from. Before you make you your decision you are going to want to figure out exactly what you are going to be looking for when laminating pouches.

One question you will want to ask yourself is what type of documents you are going to need to laminate and what size will the documents be? Pouch laminators throats vary in size from 4 inches small to 24 inches large. If you are planning on laminating documents that are letter sized you will need a 9 inch throat to do the job.

You will also need to know what thickness of laminating pouches you will need. The standard size variations are 3mil, 5mil, 7mil and 10mil. If you opt to go with a lower end laminator you will find that they are only compatible with 3mil and 5mil laminating pouches.

Another question to ask yourself is what kind of materials are you going to beĀ  laminating? Again, if you opt to choose the lower end laminator you should know that they are most likely optimized for laminating standard paper thickness…thin cardstock. If you are going to need to be laminating a thicker and heavier material you will probably want to pay the extra money to get a higher grade of laminator.

Finally, you might want to do some research on the different brand of laminators and what the different features that they might have would be. We suggest you get a laminator that has a reverse function to make sure that its easier if for some reason your laminating pouches get jammed. Another, option that we recommend is to get a laminator that has different speeds and different temperatures.

Just make sure that when you go to make your purchase that you don’t make the mistake of going in blind and just grabbing any old laminator.

Choosing the Thickness of Laminating Pouches

A pouch laminator can help to make creating professional signs very easy and very professional looking. The steps involved in protecting your documents or creating your signs are as follows…place the material or document you want laminated into your laminating pouches, then place them into the carrier and put it into the laminator. The one important thing that you need to remember is what size and thickness of pouches you are going to need.

The first thickness out of five to choose from are the 1.5mil. These are the thinnest laminating pouches available, and it is important to not that most of the machines do not support this thickness. This thickness is going to provide minimal protection but is still easy to bend and crease.

The second thickness available is 3.1mil. This size is often the size that is used for big documents. This thickness will protect your laminating pouches, but this size can still flex and curl.

The 5mil is a thin pouch that works very well for laminating small documents. This is a good size for creating a sturdy feeling document without having to pay the premium price.

The 7mil pouch will provide some more weight to your documents. A lot of times this thickness is used to laminate business cards and name badges.

Finally, the 10mil thickness is the thickest size available, this size offers a very rigid feel that is ideal for presentation material and professional signs.

More than likely you will be using the 3.1mil thickness because it provides a good amount of protection for larger documents, and the laminating pouches won’t put much of a dent in your pocket book. You won’t really have to worry if you choose the wrong thickness, as it won’t be detrimental to the appearance of your document, however, it is good to know what size will provide the best protection for your important documents, whether they are large or small.

Matte Laminating Pouches

Laminating your documents is a great way to protect your documents from getting damaged. Often people who laminate their documents would like to write on their laminated document, however, that can be difficult on laminating pouches that have a glossy finish. In order to prevent this problem, it is best to use matte laminating pouches to write on with a pen or marker.

Matte laminating pouches are going to protect your documents just as well as regular laminating pouches, but the advantage to using the matte finish is that you will have a much easier time writing on the surface. Think about how often you go into meetings thinking about how you would like to write on this document, but you don’t want to ruin it, well the matte finish is going to be great for meetings or presentations where you would like to write notes so you don’t forget anything.

There are a few different styles to choose from… Matte/Matte and Matte/Clear. Matte/Matte laminating pouches have both sides with the matte finish, which can be good, however, sometimes you would like to have the option to have the finished gloss look for presentation purposes. The Matte/Clear laminating pouches solve this problem very well. One side has the matte finish for writing, but the other side has the glossy finish for aesthetic appeal.

Having at least one side of your laminating pouch with a matte finish gives you the flexibility you will need for jotting down notes, etc. Consider this when you go to purchase your laminating pouches. They are available in many different sizes so you shouldn’t have a problem finding a size to suit your need.

I would definitely suggest the Matte/Clear pouches simply because of their versatility and functionality. They are a great option if you are not sure what laminating pouch you would like to get.
